2021, Year of the Health & Care Worker

2021 has been designated as the International Year of Health and Care Workers (YHCW) in appreciation and gratitude for their unwavering dedication in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

To celebrate 2021 as being recognised as The Year of the Health and Care worker, each month, we will be featuring a different employee in our Employee Spotlight series. This series was born with the belief that your life experiences make you the unique person you are today and influence what you bring to the amazing culture here at Shellharbour Private. We have chosen to feature those incredible individuals with a blog post dedicated to them.

This month, we welcome you to our Purchasing Officer – Michael Richardson

How long have you worked for Shellharbour Private?

I have worked at Shellharbour Private Hospital for almost 6 years now.

What is your current role?

My current role is purchasing officer at Shellharbour Private Hospital and Wollongong Day Surgery

Why did you choose to become a Health or Care Worker?

Coming from a family of health care workers, I was given subtle pushes growing up to get into healthcare as it’s a field that always has consistent work and gives a rewarding experience.

Have you had any other roles with HCA previously?

I was originally employed at Healthe Care as an AIN student and was promptly offered employment as an AIN. After being a casual AIN for roughly 2 months, I was offered a full time position as a theatre Wards person. I remained in that role for roughly 2 years, before I took on the position of full time Purchasing Officer.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The most enjoyable part of my role is without a doubt, knowing that the products I source and supply to the departments, are vital for the safe and smooth running of the hospital.

How does your role contribute to positive patient experiences and/or outcomes?

My role contributes to the positive outcome and experiences of patients by guaranteeing that we can supply the correct products required to suit patient needs as well as being able to guarantee the products we do supply, meet the industry standards.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received and would like to pass on to your colleagues?

The best piece of advice I can give is, no matter how hard a day at work you have, never take those feelings home and every day is a new day so don’t let past day stress carry over.

Provide us a highlight in your career that you would like to share.

A highlight from my career here at Healthe Care, is playing an integral part in implementing an entirely new supply and purchasing system to Shellharbour Private Hospital with the help of James Slater and Jared Harrison.
